A little over a year ago, the state legislature voted to decriminalize the possession of marijuana. It should go without saying that the vote decriminalizing possession of marijuana was a wholly unnecessary act, considering the fact that the possession of marijuana is not a crime in the first place in Louisiana.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has signed a bill to decriminalize marijuana, making the drug the most recently-abolished drug in America. Details of the bill can be found on the Louisiana House of Representatives website, which states that the bill passed by both houses of the legislature and is now officially approved. Louisiana is now the eighteenth state in the U.S. to decriminalize marijuana, which means possession of small amounts of the drug will no longer result in a jail sentence.
