While researching for a piece I was writing on cannabidiol (CBD) usage for medical purposes, I came across a recent study which indicated that CBD may help reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms. The study, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry (http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/mp.2016.46), was conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University Medical Center.

Nicotine is a drug that affects the brain, and can be very addictive, a chemical that is found in tobacco plants. Researchers are investigating the use of CBD to help people quit smoking. The study showed that CBD when used with nicotine reduced depression and anxiety in smokers. The researchers found that CBD also reduced nicotine withdrawal symptoms when used with nicotine.

Ever thought about quitting smoking? It’s a difficult habit to break, but a recent study from the University of South Carolina shows promise for a new treatment. Researchers found that a compound derived from cannabidiol (CBD) reduces withdrawal symptoms in smokers who have been trying to quit for up to a year. The study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, looked at the role of CBD in reducing nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

Have you lately stopped using nicotine-containing products? Because of your nicotine addiction, you may have realized that quitting is very difficult. Nicotine dependency holds you captive when you feel as though you need nicotine and can’t live without it. In an animal research, cannabidiol (CBD) was shown to help decrease the withdrawal symptoms associated with nicotine addiction.

Nicotine Dependence and Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms are discussed further.

Nicotine is a component in tobacco that provides pleasurable benefits but makes quitting difficult, according to the Mayo Clinic. The chemical causes these pleasurable sensations in your brain, but they only last for a short time, which is why one eventually switches to another. The more you smoke, though, the more nicotine you believe you need. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms, both emotionally and physically, may be unpleasant by the time you decide to stop smoking.

Nicotine addiction manifests itself in the following ways:

  • a desire for tobacco goods and an inability/difficulty in quitting
  • Mood swings, such as irritability
  • Uncertainty and restlessness
  • Anxiety
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Sleeping problems and exhaustion
  • Continued usage if there are any health issues

Whether you’re not sure if you’re addicted to nicotine, ask yourself questions like, “Am I able to quit smoking?” “Do I have any of the symptoms when I attempt to stop?” “Do I maintain smoking despite health problems?” and “Did smoking lead to the abandonment of certain social activities?” If you answered yes to the majority of the questions, you are most certainly addicted to nicotine.

CBD Could Help With Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms, According To Research

“Cannabidiol lowers withdrawal symptoms in nicotine-dependent rats,” according to a team of experts. The study’s aim, according to the researchers, was to “evaluate the preclinical effectiveness of a chronic CBD therapy” in reducing withdrawal symptoms caused by nicotine addiction. The research was motivated by the fact that CBD has been shown to decrease cravings related to alcohol and cocaine use, as well as the knowledge that CBD is known to regulate nicotinic receptor function.” All of this leads to the possibility of reducing nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

Three sets of nicotine-dependent male and female Wistar rats were given CBD injections for two weeks by the researchers. The researchers took measurements of the rats’ bodies and weights, as well as the dose and collected serum to determine CBD and nicotine concentrations in the animals.

CBD protected the rats from developing withdrawal symptoms “during acute and prolonged abstinence” from nicotine, according to the research. The research also discovered something intriguing: their results indicate that there is a “ceiling impact at doses” since they found “no dose-response” for CBD. They concluded that CBD may be a useful approach for “alleviating withdrawal symptoms following nicotine cessation” based on their preclinical findings.

Nicotine Addiction’s Risks

Smokers may testify to the reality that repeated efforts to quit smoking are likely to fail, and that success is contingent on the integration of and adherence to a treatment plan. Nicotine is a popular vice among many individuals all over the world since it provides a pleasant and fast rush to the body and mind. The pleasures, however, are not worth the consequences of nicotine addiction.

Smoking for the nicotine can cause lung and other respiratory cancers, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, leukemia, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, eye problems, infertility, impotence, miscarriage, weakened immune system, respiratory infections, loss of taste and smell, gum disease, dental issues, premature aging, and more, according to Healthline.

Cannabis as a Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Consuming cannabis via inhalation (joints and vaping) may not be the greatest option if you’re attempting to stop smoking. Edibles, capsules, and oils may be better choices. Edibles may be the greatest option, in my view, since customers may create their own sweets and goodies to eat during triggering circumstances. They may also be eaten in a more inconspicuous manner while still tasting great. Check out these six alternatives to smoking marijuana, as well as a recipe for a multipurpose coconut cannabis oil.

Individuals who are attempting to stop smoking should make every effort to avoid triggers and frequent smoking-related social situations. Coffee breaks at work, chatting on the phone, consuming alcohol, driving your vehicle, and spending time with friends are all examples of these. While these triggering events cannot be avoided, they may be anticipated. Putting gum in your vehicle to chew while driving, taking breaks at work in non-smoking areas, and squeezing a stress ball while on the phone are all examples of this.

Snacking is a typical side effect of quitting smoking, and it may lead to weight gain. Snacking is used by some to distract themselves from nicotine cravings or even as a reward for not giving in. To assist prevent this, strong CBD cannabis strains (such as Willie Nelson) with adequate CBD may be used, or THCV-rich strains can be used to create weight-loss-friendly edibles.

Cannabis has gained a reputation for elevating one’s mood, decreasing anxiety, relieving nausea and vomiting, enhancing sleep, invigorating (when the appropriate strain is taken), and minimizing withdrawal symptoms. More holistic methods, such as combining the medicinal effects of cannabis with psilocybin, or practicing mindfulness with cannabis throughout the day, are also viable options. Self-treatment with psilocybin is not recommended, particularly if illicit and illegal market purchases are required.

Please visit your own physician or schedule an appointment with one of our numerous experts if you have any questions or concerns about utilizing cannabis to treat nicotine addiction and withdrawal. Remember that discussing cannabis with your doctor, regardless of its legal status, is completely acceptable and recommended.
